Organizing Automotive About

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong that will be imposed upon them, and these will continue until they are resisted. “We are one, our cause is one, and we must help each other, if we are to succeed.”

Frederick Douglass

Escaped Slave & Abolitionist Leader, 1857

WHY SHOULD WE ORGANIZE WITH YOU?

Individualized Attention

Other unions overload their staff, and at District 9 we have a dedicated Organizer who will work 1:1 with you and your coworkers to make sure you have the support and resources you need. We value your time, and will make every effort to work with you on your own schedule.

Experience Across Industries

Other unions often ‘specialize’ in one industry or another, and we’re used to serving workers from all industries! Healthcare workers, non profit staff, vet techs, life guards, yoga instructors… you name it, we’ve worked with a similar group! District 9 is open to working with any group regardless of industry, and we’re ready to welcome you to our union family whenever you’re ready to put in the work alongside us.

Experience with Difficult Bosses & Anti-Union Companies

Is your boss a jerk? Is your company historically anti-union? Have no fear; District 9 is here! We’re always up for a fight, and we have the knowledge, resources, and skills needed to take on tough bosses and union-busting tactics employed by management. Our team has a positive working relationship with most managers at units we represent, but we also have experience taking on the worst kinds of bosses and anti-union companies and winning victories for workers. The choice is up to your management – do they want the easy way or the hard way? We’re ready for whatever comes our way.

IAM MEMBERS LIVE BETTER

The William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center embodies the IAM’s commitment to providing top-notch training to members of the IAM to help them navigate the rapidly changing world of work in the 21st century.

ABOUT THE IAM

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, (IAM) is the preferred Union for representing automotive professionals. The IAM represents more than 40,000 Auto and Truck Technicians and Mechanics in North America and Canada and those IAM Technicians on average bring home 30% more income than non-union techs do. The IAM’s years of negotiating experience has led to top quality contracts for thousands of Auto, Heavy Truck, Rail, Airline, Bus and Body Shop Technicians and Mechanics, providing them with better wages, benefits and working conditions. With nearly 600,000 members, the (IAM) is one of the largest and most diverse labor unions in North America. From Boeing and Lockheed Martin to United Airlines and Harley-Davidson, you will find IAM members across all walks of life.  Together, we have been able to bargain for increased job security, higher wages and improved benefits.

In the automotive industry, the IAM is THE nation’s MECHANICS Union, representing a variety of employees who work for companies such as Ryder Truck, International Truck, Yellow Transportation, Caterpillar, Cummins, USF Holland, Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, BMW, Audi, Cadillac, Mazda, Kia, Mercedes Benz, Harley Davidson, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Freightliner, Kenworth, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Lincoln, Lexus, Subaru, Jeep, Dodge, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Acura, Isuzu, Infiniti, Land Rover, GMC, Cadillac, Suzuki, Porsche, Hummer, Penske, and UPS just to name a few. Our experience in the field and at the negotiating table has proven to get results for our members.

WHY JOIN THE IAM?

By forming a Union, workers provide themselves with the opportunity to secure a voice in their workplace and ensure justice on the job. Union members are able to sit down with management as equals and bargain for better workplace conditions. For some, that might be higher wages and better benefits. For others it might be job security or fair treatment. Regardless of your specific needs, the Union is here to help. Union members:

  • Earn wages, on average, 27 percent higher than non-union workers.
  • Are 54 percent more likely to have pensions provided by their employer.
  • Are more likely to have employer-provided health insurance benefits.
  • Have greater access to apprenticeships and training opportunities.

For more than 125 years, Unions have fought for workers’ rights and the benefits so often taken for granted. Benefits like sick pay, leaves of absence, bereavement leave, holidays, vacations, retirement security and healthcare. The IAM’s years of negotiating experience has led to top quality contracts for tens of thousands of workers. By joining with your colleagues in a Union at your work place you benefit in many ways. On the job, your Union brings together the collective strength of you and your co-workers to insure meaningful negotiations with management for an equitable contract. Besides wages and salaries, areas that can be negotiated include: staffing and overtime, safety and health, cost of living raises, adequate pensions, vacations, equitable promotion systems and transfer policies, and a workable grievance system. Through your Union, you and your co-workers oversee carrying out the provisions of the contract

The IAM is here to help you. We have an experienced and motivated staff of organizing and servicing representatives to lead you through your campaign. As an IAM member, you’ll have a collective bargaining agreement – a legal document that spells out your workplace conditions and how you are treated on the job. Your collective bargaining agreement will elevate you to an equal footing with your employer and ensure you are treated fairly and your voice is heard. At the IAM, you will find one of the largest and most experienced Unions in North America.
